The structure of Telefónica Central America groups together the mobile operations of Telefónica in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Panama.
Telefónica entered the Panamanian and Nicaraguan markets with the acquisition of the Bellsouth operations in a number of Latin American countries. The operations in Panama and Nicaragua commenced under the control of Telefónica in the fourth quarter of 2004.
Previously, Telefónica had been present in the region with mobile operations in Guatemala (since 1999) and El Salvador (since the privatisation of the sector in 1998). In these four markets, the estimated mobile penetration is 101%.
In January 2011, Telefónica also won one of the concessions that was tendered out in Costa Rica, in the process of the opening up of the Costa Rican mobile market. Telefónica began to operate mobile telephony services in Costa Rica in November 2011.
Movistar – the mobile branch of Central American Telefónica structure – has 12 million mobile subscribers in five different countries.
Movistar Central America launched the Speedperform Mobile SupportWare in September 2014. The solution enables the five Movistar countries to offer their customers access to a high quality device support experience through all customer touch points. The solutions cover mobile handsets, USB data cards and tablets.
